Stop the Blue Wave with the Red Wall
If you have read any of the media coverage of this year’s mid-term elections, you’ve heard a bit about the alleged “blue wave” of Democratic candidates who believe they have their best chance in decades to take back solidly Republican seats at the state and federal level across Texas.
There is reason for Democrats to be more optimistic than usual. Hillary Clinton won the 7th Congressional District by two percentage points during the 2016 presidential election. This is the same district that Mitt Romney won by 21 percentage points. Understandably, the Culberson campaign is taking this year’s election very seriously. Democratic aligned groups have dropped a significant amount of money into our district and we’re sure to see nearly wall-to-wall political ads in this race through October.
So what role do we have to play as Republicans in Jersey Village? Certainly if you’re active enough to come to this website, you likely vote in every single election. We have to do more. We are the bricks in the red wall that will stop this so-called “blue wave”.
We have to identify people who are undecided. Maybe they consider themselves pretty conservative, but they only vote in presidential election years. Or worse yet, maybe they have never voted and they aren’t even registered to vote. We have to find these voters, talk to them about the party platform and persuade them to vote in this very important election.
We also have to ensure that the rank and file solid red Republicans in our city get out and vote as well. In the last mid-term election in 2014, only 39% of registered voters in the 7th Congressional District cast a ballot. Turnout in that same election for Precinct 74, which is entirely within the city limits of Jersey Village, and contains the vast majority of Jersey Village residents, had turnout of 54%.
We simply cannot risk such a low turnout in our city in this election.
The risk isn’t only to Congressman Culberson. If our area is seen as vulnerable to turning blue, we will see more well-funded Democratic challengers, which will only make it more difficult to protect our conservative values in Jersey Village and the surrounding area. It’s time to roll up our sleeves and get to work. We need to block walk, make phone calls, talk to our neighbors, and make sure that all of our conservative allies in our city get out to the polls and ensure we maintain our voice at all levels of government.
